Hostos Reads: Books in Common, Books in Community

“Hostos Reads” Project

Faculty, Staff and Students are invited to join the year-long Hostos Reads Project and to take part in a series of book discussions and other campus-wide events related to Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, story of a young Nigerian woman’s journey of self-discovery.  We encourage educators and students across campus to examine the interdisciplinary theme of situating yourself in the world that forms the foundation of her remarkable story. Visit the Hostos Library guide  for videos, articles, and ideas for how to use Americanah in your classes.

Americanah

Author: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie

Ifemelu and Obinze are young and in love when they depart military-ruled Nigeria for the West. Beautiful, self-assured Ifemelu heads for America, where despite her academic success she is forced to grapple with what it means to be black for the first time. Quiet, thoughtful Obinze had hoped to join her, but with post-9/11 America closed to him, he instead plunges into a dangerous, undocumented life in London. At once powerful and tender, Americanah is a remarkable novel of race, love, and identity by the award-winning writer.
